PLUMBING LAW
The Plumbing Division of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth informs us that the amendments to the Michigan Plumbing Law are working extremely well. As you know, your MWQA was the driving force behind this change in the law. Michigan is the only state where a water dealer, without a plumbing license, can obtain a permit to install a conditioner or filter system. BRINE DISCHARGE After several meetings with Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) officials, as well as other influential entities on the subject, there is no doubt that action is pending on the issues of brine discharge from water conditioners. First, it is significant that Michigan is the only, repeat only, state in the union that does not have a statewide sanitary code. As a result, there is not a uniform set of rules and directives on this subject. We are hopeful that our input will mean a uniform and understandable approach to this problem. We will immediately communicate to our members any significant action. PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX We were successful in stopping an attempt by the House of Representatives to repeal the Act initiated by the MWQA in the first place that eliminated the Personal Property Tax on water conditioning systems. After members of the MWQA Board met with key legislators and subsequently testified in front of the Taxation Committees, it became clear to legislators that the repeal was a mistake.
